Springtide Research Institute Releases Inaugural Report on Loneliness in Young People, Offers Creative Campaign During Social Distancing

The new Springtide Research Institute is working to better understand young people, ages 13 to 25, through several efforts. Springtide, which launched in 2019, is dedicated to understanding the distinct ways new generations experience and express community, identity and meaning.

Springtide released its inaugural report in late March, Belonging: Reconnecting America’s Loneliest Generation. The research-based report shows the levels of loneliness, social isolation and stress experienced by 13-to-25-year-olds are considerably higher than those of previous generations. Research also considered the impact of trusted adults in the lives of young people. The study shows how to build a framework for creating thriving, relationship-driven programs through the implementation of a process described as “Being Noticed, Named, and Known.”

Also in late March, as more people find themselves at home due to coronavirus concerns, Springtide introduced its At Home Creativity Campaign inviting young people to submit essays, poetry, songs or other creative submissions to show how they are finding connection and meaning during social distancing. Submissions are due by April 13 for possible inclusion in Springtide’s Voices of Young People blog.
