The State of Religion & Young People 2020

Unpacking the complexity of young peoples' religious lives, with special features exploring how they feel about politics, careers, and online gatherings.

The inner and outer lives of Gen Z are complex. The world today is complicated.
The way young people form bonds and make meaning is changing.
Our data show that checking “affiliated” or “unaffiliated” on a survey doesn’t tell the whole story on young people's religious identities. It doesn’t tell us all we need to know about the things young people long for and belong to.

The largest data set of its kind, The State of Religion & Young People 2020: Relational Authority collects data from over 10,000 surveys and over 150 interviews with young people ages 13-25. With special features on politics, careers, and virtual environments—as well as a comprehensive look at the changing social, religious, and cultural landscape—it not only provides data, but insights to help you act on these findings.

The findings and insights in The State of Religion & Young People make the complexity, richness, and diversity of young peoples’ religious lives clear. The report also shows what young people need most from adults amid this complexity: relationships.

It’s all the more important that young people have trusted adults in their lives to listen to, care for, and guide them. To be an effective mentor in the life of a young person today, a new framework is needed.

This report presents not only salient findings, but highly actionable insights. We call these insights Tide-Turning Tips: concrete practices and ideas for turning the tide on the experience of loneliness, anxiety, depression, or meaninglessness that plagues young people today.

Why are we giving this report away for free?

  • Because it’s too important to keep to ourselves.
  • Because up-to-date information about the state of religion and young people means more effective ministry, outreach, advocacy, and care.
  • Because new approaches and frameworks that respond to current events and shifting social factors can lead to lasting influence in the lives of young people.
  • Because, at our heart, we want to help those who care about young people, care better.
